In the search for a cool midcentury modern home in East Dallas, you’ll come across a lot of duds. Some of them, while once cool, have had their interiors sacrificed to the altar of dated renovations. It’s a sad sight to behold. But once in a while you come across a real gem that has been lovingly maintained by owners conscious of the period. This week’s High Caliber Home sponsored by Lisa Peters of Caliber Home Loans is one such property.

It’s a listing from midcentury modern expert Realtor Brandon Stewart at David Griffin & Co. and it will bring joy to the heart of any fan of the era. Just see inside!

The first thing you’ll notice about this home is the location. Yes, it does front E. Lake Highlands Drive on one side, but you also benefit from unfettered views of protected parkland at Dixon Branch on the other side. And it’s also worth noting that this uniquely carved out lot is on a great little cul-de-sac — perfect for families who want a safer place for their kids to take of the training wheels. The home, a classic L-shaped midcentury modern ranch built in 1965, is zoned for the award-winning Hexter Elementary School, too.

I love this brick home with vertical siding and stone accents, as it really speaks to the cool 1960s vibe. Additionally, the sellers did a great job of landscaping, with some Texas natives and water-wise plants mixed in with the ever-so-typical boxwoods. The entire backyard is encircled by a 6-foot horizontal privacy fence, and the sellers even added a carport for additional parking. Inside this three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath, 2,465-square-foot home you’ll find a few seamless updates that don’t distract from the period charm throughout.

“The home has a quite a bit of character that’s rarely still intact in most homes you see today,” says Stewart, who just dropped the price on 10033 Lake Highlands Place to $425,000.

Right when you enter the front door, you won’t be able to ignore the flooring. According to Stewart, the entryway and hallway is tiled with Solistone Kuala Batik Blue pebble mosaic tile — a fun detail that brings the color and texture from the exterior’s wood and stone accents inside. The rest of the floors are beautifully finished rift-cut red oak. Both living areas benefit from ample built-in cabinetry that adds both beauty and additional storage to the spaces. The views from the double-pane windows, which also insulate the interiors from the noise of nearby E. Lake Highlands Drive, are fantastic and allow light to filter in through the rooms.

The kitchen did receive some attention, with bright white quartz countertops and subway tile backsplash, as well as new stainless steel appliances. However, the original cabinetry remains, which is a stellar choice as they really don’t make them like they used to. The corner sink’s orientation allows those who prefer to hand wash a little view of the backyard.

As you might have guessed, the bathrooms in this house remain largely original. The cabinetry, tile counters, and sinks are a total throwback. I love that the sellers repainted the cabinets and added modern hardware to them. However, the lighting bars are, though period appropriate, a little too basic. Still, I do love that there is an en-suite master bath, an additional hall bath, and a powder bath. That’s a lot of bathrooms for a home this size and in this location!

What I find especially enjoyable about this home are the outdoor spaces. Stewart notes that the sellers have graded the backyard and installed French drains — a smart investment considering how unpredictable our weather can be. There’s also a 600-square-foot cedar deck and a carport. But check out this spacious lawn, covered patio, and cool fire pit area! How fun is that?

If you’re looking for great schools, great location, and great original details inside a midcentury modern with excellent spaces for entertaining, this High Caliber Home of the Week sponsored by Lisa Peters of Caliber Home Loans is an easy choice!
